Reviews for the Gandhi

I had my own special deal here because I went so often, I enjoyed the korma particularly. Once I had a ceylon here, but it was a bit too exciting for me. If I still lived in Cambridge, I would go every night.

Admittedly, we walked into the Gandhi without a reservation on busy Saturday evening, so to expect perfection was unrealistic, and to their credit, we were offered a table downstairs. From here on, however, things went downhill. Pupadums came without plates - even after we asked for some. The curry took over an hour to arrive, and when it did, the portions were small, the taste was mediocre, and the chicken was incredibly (suspiciously) chewy. Plus points would be decent beer (Cobra), and a friendly waiter. Nevertheless, I can't recommend it.

Cheap, but with slow service and if you want anything other than lager you will need to order it 4 times :-( With large groups service is appallingly slow - took an hour for us to get our main course (12 of us). Won't be returning....

i thought the food at gandhi was the best. the staff were the best part about it friendly and always making you smile. the food was excellent made you felt like you were in india. i strongly believ that gandhi is the best restaurant in cambridge and it deserved being known as the best indian restaurant in 2007.

i was extremely disappionted with not only the bad sevice but also the rather bland dissatisfaction from the food i had paid for!. The gandhi doesn't deserve the title as the best restaurant there is ive had far better 'cuisine' cooked at home by myself(and im a crap cook!)i have a busy life and expect edible food to say the least something which i did NOT find at Gandhi do your self a favour and DON'T go there!!!!!!!!!

My boyfriend raved about this place, but I found the rogan josh very bland and virtually spice free. I even sampled some of his bhuna, which tasted the same minus the tomatoes. If you're not good with spices, this is your place. If you are more adventurous, try somewhere else.

Definately recommend this place. When faced with 17 drunken footballers you could excuse them for dishing up any old crap and getting us on our way, but the unanimous verdict was that the food was delicious. The service was also very good - fast and friendly.

I've read loads of good reviews about this place, but still don't see the attraction. I found the curry unexciting although pleasant enough, but was rather annoyed when a friend's plate was taken while he was still eating.

2005-01-18 (Tue) Table of 11Service was slow, approx. half an hour for main courses to arrive.Food was delicious but main dish and side dishes were only lukewarm which somewhat detracted from the enjoyment of the meal.Waiters, through a "lunging" way of depositing dishes on the table and a rather abrupt way of asking if tableware could be moved to make space, did not encourage a relaxed ambience.

I don't court controversy - I know it always comes out well - but I wasn't really that impressed. Food fairly good if not a little ordinary, service rushed (wanted to get us, and everyone else, out as quickly as possible), and seemed a little expensive for what it was. The waiter (manager I think) turned his nose up when we presented him with a 10% discount voucher, and then was most ungracious. I may return at some point, but I've had better food, better service and a better time at many Cambridge Curry houses.

After last lesson on the last day of term at college, my friends and I decided to go an get a curry. We decided on the Gandhi after reading many good reviews. Upon arriving at the Gandhi the staff were very quick to seat us, take our coats and take our order. The Food was brought out quickly too, and was piping hot. The food was absolutely exquisite and I will have to recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala! Visit the Gandhi - it's superb!

I've been frequenting Cambrudge curry houses for four years or so, and I have to say Ghandi is consistently the best. The food is as good as you will get anywhere in the UK, and the service is good too. I frequently (wherever I eat) ask the waiter what the staff eat... and I discovered this off-the-menu-gem - TANDORI MIXED MASSALA. It is fantastic, order it at your own peril, it is highly addictive! Outstanding

Went there yesterday for my sister's 21st. We went a little early (7:30), and it was very quiet, so we were somewhat swamped by waiters! The food was truely excellent, and by 9, it was lively and an enjoyable atmosphere. There's plenty of Veggie options (the Thali is great, and you can ask for which dishes to have in it), the naan is superb and the rice is top quality. My veggie Jalfrezi was delicious - wonderfully flavourful and fresh. The meat-eaters i went with were equally happy - Chicken Tikka got top marks!Hmmm, making me hungry just thinking about it. One of the best curries in Cambridge, without a doubt!

Our regualar haunt - always fast service, excellent quality food at very reasonable prices. Unlike some of the other cambridge curry restaurants the service is normally very friendly and they're happy to accomodate students - in fact, students get 10% off.

I organised a trip here with workmates.I prebooked and said 18 were turning up. They had squashed us into a basement alcove and provided 16 seats. We complained and they moved us to another part which could seat 18 at a push, luckily 17 turned up.Everyone had pleasent meals and an enjoyable time. Food was quick at coming to the tables and staff were friendly and helpful when my chair fell apart (not due to my build, but the condition of the furniture).Nothing outstanding about the food though, but nice enough.

I've been to the Ghandi a few times in my curry eating time in Cambridge and found it to be quite variable. Reports including Dr S's on this site suggested that now the Ghandi is once again riding high. Overall, I have to agree in terms of the quality of food - had a very tasty dhal soup & vegetable Kashmiri. Unfortunately, the poppadoms were not fresh, which was surprising given the large no of diners, but not to worry. One consistent gripe with this place is the ambience. I've always found it a bit so-so, and the recent visit was no different. A group of loud office boys at the adjacent table, who insisted of karate chopping their poppadoms and being pretty loud didn't help, but then that's not really the Ghandi's fault – more the parents.

Just had an excellent meal there. Good service. Nice pint of Kingfisher. Excellent juicy and tasty tandoori chicken starter. And similarly excellent shakooti chicken, with garlic nan and rice. What I tried would have got 10/10 if I were scoring it.

As ever, my favourite curry house in Cambridge with the friendliness of the staff complementing the quality of the food. I have yet to experience an off-day there and would recommend wholeheartedly to anyone.

We arrived, admittedly on a Saturday evening, to a raucous noise from the lager louts near the door. Despite having reserved, out table wasn't ready and we were told to sit on a tiny cluster of chairs by the side of the room to wait. In the meantime our suspicions were raised by the plates of omelettes and chips we saw wheeling by and the general look of the place, and in the end we scarpered to the Saffron Brasserie which indeed seems to have better food and service than in the Rajbelash days.

I didn't visit the Gandhi for over a year (back then I thought it was ok but not spectacular) and decided that with all the good reviews, I'd better try again. It took them some time to make the prawn dhansak, but once it arrived, it was fantasic. Haven't had one with quite as much flavour anywhere else. The chicken pakora was good as well. I'll be going there again.

Some curry houses do some dishes well, others are better at different ones. Quite simply the Gandhi does evrything well. For quality and service this is the best curry house i have visited in cambridge. With value for money exceeded only by the Kohinoor(on Sundays), and quality of curry exceeded only by the Maharajah Chicken Korma, this place is my favourite curry house in cambridge. If your curry is on a sunday, go to the Kohinoor, any other day or time, the Gandhi is the place to go. Hot dishes such as Jalfrezi, or even the Vindaloo(a notoriously difficult dish to make 'tasty') are particularly recommended. Beer is good, service is superb and sundries such as naan and poppadums are faultless - and it is directly across the steet from the Hogshead, what more can you ask for?

The gandhi is my second favourite Indian in Cambridge (Next to the Pipasha) The endearing elderly waiter makes you feel that you are actually eating in India. These boys put together some winning curries. I'm vegetarian so have a more limeted choice than canivors, but this does nothing to spoil the enjoyment of their bloody good curries, made by professionals. Check the Vegetable Boona out and while you're at it have one of their reasonably priced Aloo Gobis. The only critism is the fact the restuarant can be frequented by loud mouth yuppy-types (look at me, look at my phone) earlier in the evening, to avoid these challenging indeviduals go after office times, and don't be scared to look daggers at them if they annoy you, with their benal existances.

An excellent restaurant which introduced me to the pleasures of shakooti chicken. Service is fine and I've never been disappointed with anything I've eaten here. On my last visit, June 2001, I brought two friends from Newcastle who declared it perhaps the best curry they'd ever had (we were all on the shakooti chicken that night). However, it seems to have lost a little in the taste stakes since my first visit 18 months ago. Fickle, decadent palate or a drop in their standards? My recent rediscovery of the Curry Queen means the Gandhi has to take second place in my personal listing.

Whilst other members of our party seemd to enjoy their meals, I have to say that the Chicken Rogan I had was rather bland and the Okra in the Bindhi Bhaji were old and very tough (clue: okra cut up). Also, I had no napkin and side plate and the service, whilst quick and relatively efficient, was not 'friendly'. Overall I thought it below average, but I think I was the only one with this view! :O)

Kingfisher good. Poppadoms and pickles average. Bahjis tried (mushroom, bombay potato, sag alooo) were a bit below average. The jalfrezi was too sweet for my liking - barbeque sauce? And I thought the tandoori duck was dry and tough. Other main courses I tried were quite tasty though unfortunately I cannot remember all their names, there was a shakooti chicken which was good and a limey chicken dish. Service and atmosphere very good. Despite a lot of negative details I have commented on, I came out feeling as if I had had a good meal.

The Ghandi does some very nice tasty dishes, The tikka masala is particularly recommended and they have some variations on that on offer (with extra spices etc). The service is good, definately recommended.

They do the most delicious Garlic Chicken and I'm told that the Chicken Tikka Mossalla is pretty fab too.
