Curry in Cambridge
Reviews for the Golden Curry

This is one of my favourite curry places in Cambridge.
The service is usually pretty quick and freindly, and they handle
large groups (10-20 of us) pretty well.
There is some variability in the food quality, as I usually go for
the same korai chicken, lime rice and tarka dal, which goes from excellent to pretty good.

Went last Sunday night. We had Puppadums, Onion Bhaji starter, Chicken Ceylon and Chicken Balti for main course. All the food was good; the puppadums were fresh, the Naan was excellent - straight out of the tandoor - and they served a decent pint of draft lager. The service was efficient and unobtrusive. This is the second time I've been recently and I'd really recommend the place for serving good food and being thoroughly competent.

I've only been once, and to be fair it was very late (after kicking out time at the White Swan!). They agreed to serve us, but then proceeded to rush the whole thing so much that we wished we'd gone for a kebab. The madras was the most flavourless I have ever been served. It literally tasted like tomato soup with a dash of cheap supermarket mixed herbs sprinkled on top. To be fair, my 3 companions said their dishes were fine (they had jalfrezis). Although that might have been down to the fact they were blind drunk! I might try it again one day earlier in the evening, but I certainly don't recommend going late.

This place used to rate fairly well with me, but recently I had a dish that was supposed to be vegetarian which hada peice of chicken in it. Vegetarians beware!

I was surprised when the Golden Curry dropped from #2 in the rankings quite dramatically a while back. Not too long before that I'd had a very good meal there and was impressed. Just had another quality meal there. Didn't particularly like the pushiness of the waiter who kept trying to get us to buy more beers, but even that wasn't in the same league as the pestering experienced in the Saffron Brasserie. All I can assume is that the scorers of this board had a so-so time there, but for what it's worth, I still rate it highly.

The last time we went here we were seated right by the kitchen door. It was therefore a bit of a surprise that they managed to ignore us for a good 50 mins, at least, in between taking our orders and bringing us our main courses. Finally we had to physically stand up and plant ourselves in the waiters path to get his attention. Then he looked panicked and disapeared into the kitchen, where he could be heard shouting at the kitchen staff. Also it was freezing cold where we were sitting. So yes, the food is good enough, the resturant is pleasant if you get a decent seat and the prices are bearable. But it's not perfect.

First visit ever the other night. Good experience. Ambience fine, but then I like dark green. Poppadoms & starter were excellent. Main course was very good. Good vegetarian selection. Meat-eating frends very more than happy with their choices. Parking can be a bit tricky if you arrive late, though early evening no problems.

I love Curry, and am always up for trying a rarely visited curry house out.My girlfriend had possibly the worst Chicken Korma I have ever seen. The Almond powder (like from a cake) was lumpy, the sauce pathetic and half made. It had simply been rushed together, a sham of a curry. I had vegetable pasanda, it wasn't too bad to be fare, but the Korma. I can't stop going on about it. It quite upset me.

I recently visited this for a second time. On my first visit a few months ago I was a bit underwhelmed by their Chicken Pasanda. This time was more enjoyable - very tasty food (though not quite as good as in some other places IMO) and quick service despite the house being full of guests.

My second favourite restaurant in Cambridge. The food is consistently well above average. The service is usually very attentive when it's quiet. However, I agree with the other reviewer's comments that if it is busy or you are in a large group you can end up waiting for half an hour or more before they even get your drinks order.

Superb! In a group of 8 we were looked after wonderfully. The menu was a bit confusing with many a strange dish being listed but they were all superb. Definately recommended!

I enjoy the food here and the service is very pleasant - but I also had a bad time with a large group. Clearly the logistics of feeding 20 people simultaneously are harder than those for a group of 4 - but it was still a pretty poor show, with people finishing their main courses as others' starters arrived.
Do visit but max out at 8.

Mmmmm. Interesting menu. Nice, warm and crisp popadoms. 3 different curries, each very distinctively spiced, not too hot, with well-cooked (not overdone) juicy flavoursome meat. Bahjis where you can still taste something of the vegatable. Attentive, but not overly-so service. Did I say I enjoyed the meal? If I had a slight niggle it would be the mediocre pickles. It is also one of the more more expensive curry houses in Cambridge, but well worth the extra quid or two, and that is all the difference amounted to afterall.

I have been to many curry houses in Cambridge and I always return here.
Why? Because they simply do the best curry in Cambridge. Full on flavour and if you like it hot, that's how you will get it.
I have never experienced bad service and the food is always star quality.
The only downside is that it seems to be Rory McGrath's local as well so you may find your conversation eclipsed by a pucker TV star and his groupies (no offence, Rory!)

This place used to be my favourite curry house, they do a really good Chicken Pasanda and Jalfrezi. Until we went with a large 30th birthday party. The group was pre-booked as there was 25 of us. We waited a good half hours before they even asked for a drinks order! The food came in dribs and drabs so some had finished their meal before others meals had even arrived. The whole fisaco took 3 hours and my food had to be returned to the kitchen to be re-heated. No discount was offered for the bad service. If you like this curry house only go in small groups!
