Reviews for the Kohinoor

An average dining experience. We started with puppadums, chutney tray, and Onion Bhajee which were all Ok. For main course we had Chicken Ceylon, Chicken Dhansak, rice and naan. The Ceylon had plenty of flavour although it was very oily and the chicken was small and a bit mangy looking! The Dhansak had an unusual taint to it and my girlfriend woke up with a stomach ache later (although this may be pure coincidence). The naan bread was good. Service was sloppy despite there being 3 waiters and a fairly quiet restaurant.

I remembered this place from my time as a student 13 years ago, as serving as good a curry as anywhere on Mill Road for considerably less money. Although the decor had changed not one jot in all those years, pretty much everything else had. It was expensive (even by London standards), and for that I expected something decent. Instead I received a mediocre curry - 'watery' sauce in which I could play 'hunt the chicken' combined with mediocre service - getting an itemised receipt for my food was a major undertaking. Anything positive? Not much - the nans were good and my sag panir was fine, but unless that's what you're after, I'd keep on walking. 3 out of 10.

Went to the Kohinoor last night. The place was quite empty at about 7.30. Despite there being plenty of spare tables all over the place, the waiter attempted to sit us sandwiched between two other tables where there were people eating. Why do they always try to do this in curryhouses ? Anyway, the waiter relented when we suggested we sit somewehere else. Service was quick. Food was distinctly average and the waiters seem to hover around your table far too much. 4 out of 10.

Tonight we took the advive of the previouse comments by 'Black Cab Curry Club' who left a message yesterday. When we mentioned you guys names they gave us free sagaloo, naan's and 2 shots of port each. A splendid meal thankyou for your tip. Will be returning next time we're in Cambridge.

i went to the kohinoor for my 16th birthday and we had a table for eighteen. the waiters were all extremely friendly and efficient and seemed determined to make a good impression and make my night a good one. food was quick to arrive, they got all the orders correct. everyone thoroughly enjoyed their curries. my sister had asked them if they would bring the millies cookie cake she had brought, through and they dimmed the lights and the whole curry house sang happy birthday to me. starters, main courses, popadoms, naan breads and several drinks each worked out to be £15 a head. extremely good service and everyone had a great time.

Offers a reasonable deal most nights, but the service is appaling. We booked a table for 20, but were repeatedly fobbed off after we arrived, only being seated over an hour later. The staff then failed to take our orders accuratly and were generally unhelpful. The food took far too long to arrive.

I went to the kohinoor last night, and it was one of the most stressful experiences of my life. We booked a table for 20 people for 830, but when i phoned up again, they asked us to make it 9, but as late as possible. We turned up at 915, hoping to give them enough time. There was no table for us to sit together, indeed there were only 16 chairs left in the whole restaurant. Some of our party left to go to the gandhi, and the rest of us were moved twice, in order to get our group together. The manager, who I might add was an absolute pratt, refused to give us anything complementary, though may have given us 10% off the bill but i'm not sure. This is all a great shame, because the food was good, and most people seemed to agree. I did notice however that the waiters seemed very keen to remove things from the table, which was slightly annoying. And that's it. I don't think i'll be going back, especially not in a large group, because our booking apparently counted for nothing.

I visited this evening, and while the place maybe does not deserve its current position at the bottom of the table (and I suspect it is about to move up), it is still in my opinion one of the less good of the Cambridge curry houses. The visit started off well. Service was very friendly and attentive, and there was a very pleasant bustling atmosphere for a Monday evening. Popadoms, drinks, bahjis and nans etc were fine too. I thought things were looking up since my last visit, which was several years ago. The big let down was the main courses. Dry meat, brown mushy sauces lacking any freshness of flavour. Pity. They now seem to have good value special deals most evenings, so get one of those if you want to try the place.

the Kohinoor has come into soem bad press recently. Still, their £8 sunday deal remains the best in cambrigde. For £8 you receive a choice of any starter on the menu, any main course on the menu(which includes speciality dishes priced at as much as £10)any rice, and naan, and a soft drink, topped off with a complimentary glass of port. This is not to say the curry is bad, far from it. Their shakooti chicken is the best i've tasted, and the dopiaza was thick and tasty without compromising on the meat. the King prawn puri as a starter was spot on interms of both size and piquancy. In all, this may not have THE best quality curry in cambridge, but not far from it.

Rating: poor. The curries are indistinguishable brown slop, with little difference in either taste or appearance between a dopiaza and a jalfrezi. Both were made from frozen mixed veg. Pilau rice was very greasy. Service was either absent or far too hurried.

I've never returned to the Kohinoor since the time (about siz years ago) a fat cockroach crawled out from under the poppadoms we'd just been served, walked across the top, and disappeared down the other side! It really happened.

It had been a few years since I'd been there, so I tried the Kohinoor recently... I wish I had stayed in 1996! The food was fine - don't get me wrong. Good curry, fresh poppadums, pickles were ok (not a huge selection, though). However, the service was terrible. It was like being on a conveyor belt! The waiter(s!) tried to remove every dish before I had finished with it. The pickles disappeared almost as soon as they appeared! It was poor, and made the evening more stressful than it had to be. It's not as if they were busy: and now I see why. A shame - but the Golden Curry and Curry Queen are just down the road, so why anyone would go to the Kohinoor is beyond me.

First time I ever went there with some student friends (last saturday). The service was very good, even though it was busy. Shame about the decor. I choose my favourite Chiken Balti, which was one the best balti's I have ever had.
