The Panahar is easily our favourite curry restaurant in Cambridge - and we have tried them all! It's friendly, the food is good and the prices very reasonable. Best Dall Samba in town!

Not as good as the previous reviews suggest! The puppadums and chutney tray were fine but not as fresh as they could've been. For main course we had Lamb Dhansak, Chicken Tikka Saag, Naan and Rice. The Dhansak had a bit of a taint to it, maybe a bit of a burnt flavour, which wasn't good at all. The Naan was strangely flat (none of the bubbling that you usually get when they are cooked in a hot tandoor), but the Chicken Tikka Saag was OK. We shan't be hurrying back!

My first visit here since it had newly opened back in 2002. The tandoori chicken starter was still smoothered in red sauce, which dyed not only the chicken but also my fingers - I went last night and they are still "tandoori" coloured this morning. Everthing else was great. Items that stood out as being good for me were the really cold Kingfisher and the shakooti chicken, which IME was spot-on in terms of heat, freshness, meat quality and sauce texture. Possibly a tad on the greasy side generally, but hey you don't go to an Indian Restaurant if you want healthy eating!

Visited the Panahar with a group of eight on Saturday 18th. Nice decor. Visit motivated in part by their participation in current Walker's Crisps promotion: we had two vouchers between us. Erring on the side of caution I suggested we declare up the intention to use the vouchers, in case late presentation rendered them invalid. (For those who don't know, the vouchers will make the cheaper of two main courses free, up to a value of ten pounds.) Clearly with a group of eight this might not have much influence on the bill. I mention all this just to suggest that the averageness of the experience could have been influenced by us using the vouchers -- although why that should be, I dunno. They were busy but service still seemed unnecessarily slow. Our food took over an hour to arrive. When it did, we were the last people eating in the restaurant. They ran out of bottled Cobra at this time. Food was of an average standard for a Cambridge curry house: I had the shakoothi chicken, which was at least hot but not especially tasty and it was only a small portion. On the positive side, they did happily produce variations on the dishes for people: two of our party wanted mushrooms and spinach added to their curries. To cap it all, they computed the total value of the vouchers as under five pounds, by observing the fact that two of the group ate side dishes for their mains. Not an especially positive experience, then. Not bad, but I would be wary of going again, especially if bearing Walker's vouchers.

I've been to the Panahar quite a few times now, and I can heartily recommend it. Usually the curries are very tasty, but not overpowering, unlike many a restaurant. For example, the dhansak tends to taste nice and earthy, with a really good lentil taste coming through. The jalfrezi (chicken or lamb) is excellent - great pepper and chilli flavours, a good rich sauce. All in all, it's my favourite curry restaurant in Cambridge.

The chutneys that came with the poppadums were very good (no fizzy fermenting mango here, and four types provided - mango, lime, chopped onion and cucumber, and that red stuff that I can never identify), and the lager was reasonably kept. The chicken Ceylon I ordered was very pleasant and slightly spicier than they usually are in other restaurants, and was of an acceptable (but not outstanding) quality. The decor was unusual, in that the restaurant has gone for a Scandinavian pine interior. The restaurant is small and was surprisingly busy for a Monday night.

Inspired by the Stirbitch posting I went there too. I agree with the pleasant atmosphere comment, but in some ways found it unnerving and not in keeping with either an Indian restaurant or the location - the restaurant being located in a seedier part of town. Food was pretty good, IMHO. Poppadoms and pickles were very good; starters and main dish were also good, but perhaps a little less spicy than I had hoped - that's often the case with vegetarian curries, though. My meat-eating friends were also impressed with their selections and had the opposite comment to mine - namely that theirs were more spicy than expected. Selection of dishes was pretty good – certainly a wide selection esp. for us veggies. When it gets rated, I would expect it to get a reasonably high position. A welcome addition to the Cambridge curry scene and one I’ll definitely be using from time to time.

Very pleasant atmosphere with light wood floor and furniture.
A real red rose on each table. Basically free of most of the
tack you would usually associate with an Indian restaurant.
though they couldn't resist having a lantern on the bar
with an illuminated landscape. Food OK but nothing special.
Dansak a bit on the greasy-side perhaps, spices in the shakooti
not quite as freshly tasting as they might be, and my tandoori chicken starter
was smothered with some "tandoori sauce" liquid I could have done
without. Not that the food was bad - just that it didn't really
live up to the expectations raised by the decor. It's only been
open 6 days so maybe it will improve. Already seems to be quite
popular. Early on a Monday evening there were (including us)
two tables occupied and a regular stream of people getting
take-aways. Didn't strike me as being particularly expensive
